Gower Memorial Cemetery

Edmond Historic Sites

Several populations of African Americans settled near Edmond during the 1889 Land Run. The Gower family donated part of their homestead as a cemetery; one of the last remaining evidences of African American culture before statehood.

It is one of the few sites in Oklahoma associated with the rural settlement of African Americans prior to statehood and the enaction of the Jim Crow Laws in 1907. The cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
