Exhibit: Seals of Isaiah and King Hezekiah Discovered

Thu, February 1Sun, March 312018-02-012019-03-31 | Armstrong Auditorium14400 S. Bryant Rd, Edmond, OK 73034

Items on display will include nearly three dozen artifacts from the time of King Hezekiah, including the recently discovered royal seal impressions of King Hezekiah and Isaiah from the Ophel excavations, royal Judean clay vessels, and weapons used during the siege of Lachish. The exhibit will also feature key Assyrian history and will include replicas of such artifacts as the famous Annals of Sennacherib Prism (aka Taylor/Jerusalem/Oriental Prism), various other Assyrian inscriptions, and the famous Assyrian wall reliefs. “The stars of the show are the Hezekiah and Isaiah bullae,” said Brad Macdonald, curator of the exhibit. “But the supporting cast – the arrow heads from Lachish, Sennacherib’s prism, the Assyrian wall reliefs – is also pretty extraordinary. We will use maps, illustrations, interactive aids, and storyboards to connect all these articles and create what we believe will be a unique and moving experience.” Discovered by archaeologist Dr. Eilat Mazar of Hebrew University, the clay seals, called bullae, were found only one yard apart on the Ophel at the foot of the Temple Mount. According to their inscriptions, the seals belong to King Hezekiah of Judah, who ruled in the 8th century B.C. and Isaiah, possibly “the prophet.” “This is truly a historic exhibition. Artifacts from the Assyrian siege of Jerusalem have been exhibited previously, but these exhibits have never included the seals of King Hezekiah and Isaiah,” Macdonald said. “Visitors would have to travel to London, Jerusalem, Istanbul and Chicago to see everything on display. Here we’ve brought them all together in one place.” Edmond’s Herbert W. Armstrong College assists Dr. Mazar’s Temple Mount Ophel excavations and helped uncover both the Hezekiah and Isaiah, and now has the honor of hosting the world premiere."

In 1967 when the musical “Hair” was first performed, the artworld in America was rapidly changing. Genres like Pop Art, Optical Art, and Perceptual Art were gaining popularty. Jason Wilson, a contemporary Perceptual artist from Tulsa, OK exhibits his Op Art-themed pieces reminiscent of 1960s artists such as Frank Stella and Richard Anuszkiewicz. These paintings, inspired by his grandmother’s quiltwork, take the eye into the transcendental world of highly constructed designs and color-field shapes. The exhibit is located in the Krottinger Family Gallery, a space located in the hallway leading into the newly renovated dressing rooms, classrooms and theater spaces of  Mitchell Hall. The gallery exhibits work from UCO Art and Design alumni and intends to be a space that celebrates the continuum of UCO artists and designers who have created significant work for the Oklahoma City metro and beyond.

The aim of historical practice and performance by the Brisch Center for Historical Performance is to understand and present music from the past as close to the composers’ intention as possible. This includes the use of historical instruments (or modern replica), the knowledge of repertoire and how it was performed at the time (performance traditions). These performance traditions were not necessarily notated in the score, but have been identified through first hand literature such as treatises. The goal of the center is to increase our understanding and enjoyment of the music.

She began singing early on as a member of the Henry Mancini Chorus, which led to a successful career in the Los Angeles studios, where she appeared on countless film scores and recordings with such notable artists as Placido Domingo, Quincy Jones, and Michael Jackson. Her debut CD, simply titled Monica Mancini was the companion to her PBS television special, Monica Mancini: On Record. Monica released her fifth album I’ve Loved These Days - a collection of classic 60s songs featuring collaborations with Stevie Wonder, Brian Wilson, Jackson Browne, and Take 6, arranged for full orchestra. To celebrate the release of the USPS Henry Mancini Commemorative Postage Stamp, Monica kicked off an extensive 60-city tour, followed by sold-out concerts at Carnegie Hall, Disney Hall, Boston Symphony Hall and Tanglewood with John Williams and the Boston Pops.    The New York Times has described Mancini’s rich, expressive voice as “the glamorous vocal equivalent to diamonds flashing.” On her approach to interpreting a song, she says, “I always keep in mind the composers intention because I believe melodies and lyrics are crafted with a definite purpose. I want to bring out the beauty of the writer’s word through music.”   Composer John Williams writes: “Monica Mancini brings her talent, musicality and most of all, love to the music, and proves that the passage of musical genes didn’t stop with the Bachs, Strausses or Ellingtons!”

They’ve each stopped off to the land of “funk,” and laid bare their “soul” more times than can be counted. Equilibrium has sweated it out in a garage to make their harmonious echo and sharpened their musical consciousness in the discipline of Jazz. Using the sensual sounds of a seashell to compel their listeners, Equilibrium always seems to know how to satisfy their audience. Equilibrium is a union of hard-won experience with the simple desire to make people enjoy their story through the medium of music, the deepest expression of the human experience. Two of the members teach at the Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma and share their love for music with their students every day. Equilibrium is filled with diverse influences and talents with a common goal: challenging themselves to make music they love, and bring the audience on the journey with them. Jazz enriched but with a firm pop sensibility, Equilibrium makes heads turn by staying true to their soul/rock roots. They have opened for Ian Moore, Monte Montgomery, Johnny A., Morris Day, The Time, and the legendary B.B. King. They also closed the 2011 Edmond Jazz Festival in Edmond, OK, and were awarded the Oklahoma Gazette’s reader-voted “Woody” award for Best Jazz Band in 2009. Performing Songs from her new album: Sacred Places. $15 Cash/Check · Doors at 6:15 *Cash Bar (not food service)* Call (405)974-2100 to reserve seats. Classical contemporary in genre, the piano compositions of Holly Jones are described as meditative, impressionistic, thematic, yet transcendent of time and space.  Holly will be featuring fresh compositions from her fourth album, "Sacred Places," set to be released May, 2019, at the UCO Jazz Lab June 6, 2019, at 7:00 p.m.  Holly describes her inspiration of "Sacred Places":  "A 'sacred place' is the moment in time when one recognizes they are participating in something greater than themselves. This can happen anywhere...in daily conversation, our 'work', and what otherwise might be misperceived as a mundane aspect of life.  We have to look for these sacred places.  They give  us  the  richness and  authenticity of  our experiences." Born in western Kentucky, Holly began studying violin at age three, piano at eight, and creating compositions on the piano by nine.  Her training includes many years of private study, as well as private classical piano and composition study at Indiana University.   Holly's solo piano debut album, "Traveler" was released in 2003.  Her second album "Storyteller" was released in 2016, followed by the orchestrated version of "Storyteller" in 2017, by Ludek Drizhal, featuring Holly at the piano and the Prague Metropolitan Orchestra. As a physical therapist, Holly has an inherent understanding of the healing power of music, and enjoys the art of creating pieces that are "good for the neurology."  She lives with her husband, dear Fred, and beloved doggy daughter, Darbie,  in Edmond, OK and loves playing in StudioJones, the self-proclaimed "best practice room in the world." "I wish for my music to reach the truth in each person listening...to help them take pause in the busyness of life and to bring them peace and clarity. I envision that it is most likely played as background music...it provides a setting of peace...but when one listens closer, it can 'take them away'...and always to the best place..."

This multitalented musician is bringing new flavor to the music scene with his blend of traditional and smooth jazz peppered with a dash of gospel. Although a native of New Orleans, Jackson’s musical talent was infused with gospel and R&B while growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and performing at his father’s church. The encouragement he received from this large congregation helped him hone his skills as a musician and composer while performing on keyboards, piano, drums, bass, guitar and, of course, the saxophone. Jackson’s influences also stemmed from the soulful jazz style of legends he’s admired such as: David Sanborn, Grover Washington, Jr. and Dexter Gordon. Named El-Jack by his fans, Jackson has opened for or shared festival stages with a talented cross-section of urban jazz and R&B greats: Wayman Tisdale, Najee, Howard Hewett, Jeffrey Osborne, Angela Winbush, Stanley Jordan, Dru Hill, Shirley Murdock, SOS Band, Con-Funk-Shun, Tom Braxton and fellow Tulsans Charlie Wilson and The GAP Band. Recently he performed on the national Soul Food Festival Tour, bringing his trademark sound and sultry spontaneity to audiences as the sole instrumentalist on a bill with R&B legends Peabo Bryson and The Whispers. The tour made stops in Jacksonville, Kansas City, Baton Rouge and Nashville. Jackson enjoys sharing his unique style with jazz fans throughout the country. Recently he gigged at the Long Beach Jazz Festival, the Red Cat Jazz Café in Houston, the Brooklyn Jazz Café in Dallas, Humphreys in San Diego and Blues Alley in D.C. In Oklahoma, Jackson is well known for his regular gigs at Tulsa hotspots, and his Winelight Jazz shows along with headlining at casinos such as River Spirit, Hard Rock, Osage Million Dollar Elm and RiverWind. He’s also a huge draw at Mayfest, Tulsa’s largest outdoor festival. The heavy gigging saxophonist has exhilarated audiences at nearly every jazz event in Oklahoma including The Charlie Christian Jazz Festival and the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame Jazz Fest. One of the highlights of his career was collaborating with the late great Wayman Tisdale on his debut album. The duo had been friends since middle school and watched each other develop musically over the years. One summer when Tisdale was between seasons in the NBA, he sat in with Jackson’s band at the local Greenwood Jazz Festival, and by 2008 their friendship had come full circle with the release of Listening Pleasure. Unfortunately the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of famer Wayman Tisdale passed away shortly after the official release of the album. But his protégé continues to keep his spirit alive by paying tribute to his jazz contributions and their friendship during every live performance.
