Be one of the first 66 people to get a selfie in front of the new Route 66 Shield at Fink Park, 611 Park Place, and tag #Edmondon66. The Oklahoma Route 66 Centennial Commission gifted a custom steel monument that stands 72” tall and 22” deep to 42 cities along Route 66. Installation of Edmond’s shield took place on Tuesday, July 28. Selected cities worked with designers to choose a theme highlighting ways Route 66 shines in their community.

A committee of tourism leaders toured local sites that tourists and residents could easily access to place the new Route 66 shield. “We chose Fink Park because it is along Route 66 with proximity to Route 66 attractions like the University of Central Oklahoma, 1889 Territorial Schoolhouse and Downtown Edmond,” said Dena Jones, former chair of Visit Edmond Tourism Advisory Board and Regional Manager of Champion Hotels and Development. Committee members felt it was important to find a place with shade trees, places to sit, parking, and easy access for selfies.

Edmond’s Route 66 icons featured on the shield include, from top to bottom:

  • The Uncommon Ground Sculpture Park (Six horses to honor Paul Moore’s large-scale “Valley of the Horse” art)
  • Old North Tower at University of Central Oklahoma
  • Blue Hippo
  • 1889 Territorial Schoolhouse
  • Trees
  • Arcadia Lake (Kayaking)
