Route 66 turns 100 in 2026, and Edmond Fine Arts is celebrating the Mother Road’s centennial with a special photography exhibition, The Other Side: Project A Photographic Road Trip through America’s Heart. Featuring photographers Melinda Green Harvey and VC Torneden, the show invites visitors to discover a different side of America’s most iconic highway.

Join Edmond Fine Arts for the gallery opening on Thursday, November 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

While Route 66 is famous for its nostalgic roadside attractions, neon signs and historic landmarks, The Other Side takes a closer look at the everyday, overlooked, and forgotten places along the highway. Photographed over the five years leading up to Route 66’s centennial, the growing collection documents the changes taking place along the Mother Road and the communities that give it character.

The collaborative project brings together two photographers with complementary perspectives. Torneden has spent more than a decade documenting Route 66, capturing the small details and forgotten stretches that tell its lesser-known stories. Harvey, whose work frequently explores small-town life and places in decline, brings a fresh perspective to the highway’s changing landscapes and the remnants of what has been left behind.

Together, their photographs offer a thoughtful look at Route 66’s modern history, encouraging viewers to look beyond familiar attractions and appreciate the stories hidden along the way.

Harvey’s work has been exhibited across the country, and her photographic series Where the Wind Gallops is part of the permanent collection of Texas Tech University Library’s Southwest Collection. Torneden’s multidisciplinary practice spans photography, painting, drawing and printmaking, with exhibitions nationwide, including her solo photography exhibition Reflections of Route Sixty-Six at Spiva Center for the Arts in Missouri.

As Route 66 celebrates its centennial, The Other Side offers a meaningful way to reflect on the people, places and changing landscapes that have shaped this historic American highway.
